Dørålen - Every Moment Counts

On one of the last days of visible autumn foliage in Dørålseter Valley. The strong wind was cold at sunrise, but something spectacular was about to happen that made me forget all about the wind.
As the absolute first morning light found a small opening between clouds and heavy morning fog it illuminated these snowcapped peaks in a way I`ve never before have witnessed. The thick fog partly obscured another mountain in the background which I think enhanced the mood and simplicity of this photograph.

Rondane - Mountain Spirit

At the end of a 3-day trek in Rondane National Park, I was hoping to reach Smiukampen Mountain (1799 m.) before nightfall.

The massive, fresh snowfall was almost impossible to stay on top with my skis. Halfway there I witnessed a spectacular sunset overlooking Storsmeden (2016 m./6614 ft.), Rondslottet (2178 m./7145 ft.) and Storronden (1238 m./7014 ft.) mountains.
Only minutes after this was shot, the sun had fallen enough to leave all this snow in shadows and the magic moment was gone.

The Gateway

Rondvatnet Lake and Storronden Mountain, 2138 m. (7014 ft.), in Rondane Nasjonalpark, Norway. January 2010.

A single 26 min. long exposure. The position of the moon, a cloudless sky and accurate shooting direction (towards the Northern Star) was essential elements to successfully capture this photograph. The long exposure shows the earths` rotation, giving the impression of moving stars. Several attempts had been made during the last three winters, but none which was successfull. I was skiing with a small headlamp in total darkness and the amazingly bright stars on a perfectly clear night sky made a huge impact on me. It felt like I could reach out and actually touch the stars.
This particular night may be one of my finest experiences in Rondane National Park ever. Truly a magical moment.

Skiing with zero vision in thick fog really woke up my senses. This scenery was revealed when I went lower to escape the worst fog and after a while the fog gave me a short glimpse of Svarthammaren and then it was all gone. Like it never happened.

Fast moving clouds driven by northern wind made me observe Storsmeden Mountain for a long time in an almost hypnotized state of mind. For every passing second the light was flickering, dancing and seemed to change the characteristics of the mountain a thousand times.

Summer night at Vinjeronden Mountain (2044 m./6706 ft.) in Rondane National Park, Norway. July 2010.

After a night climb to Vinjeronden I sat watching the soft illumination of a sleeping sun. From the edge there is a straight fall down and the view over Storbotn Valley towards Høgronden Mountain (2118 m./6949 ft.) in the distance was truly breathtaking.

This photograph is a manual blend of two exposures of the same subject, one for the sky and one for the earth (shadows), due to the light level difference.
